Samuel D. Hughes 79, of Little Rock, Ark., transitioned from labor to reward on Thursday, July 15, 2010. He was born to the late Sonny and Annie Hughes on July 16, 1930 in Kansas City, Mo. Sammy accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and praised him throughout his illness. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School, Philander Smith College and received a Masters of Arts from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Sammy taught at Dunbar High School and later went to work for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier where he retired after 42 years of service. He was a great debater and an avid hunter and a lover for the outdoors. He leaves to cherish his memories: his beloved wife, Wyvonnia Hughes; his daughter, Pat Martin of Jonesboro, Ark.; his grandchildren, Camaron Garmen of Dallas, Texas, Steve (Michelle) Young of Fort Smith, Ark., James Sullivan of New Orleans, La., Nekekia and Erik Martin of Jonesboro, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Stevie, Dominique, Kenya Young and Ty'Kera Sullivan a host of other relatives and friends. A celebration of Sammy's life will be Friday, July 23, 2010, 11 a.m. Interment will follow with military honors at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, 1501 Maryland Ave. North Little Rock, Ark. Visitation will be Thursday, July 22, 2010, 6-7 p.m., both services at Ruffin & Jarrett Funeral Home Chapel, 1200 Chester St., LR (501) 372-1305.
