John "Ned" Switzer

JOHN EDWIN "NED" SWITZER, 87, of Little Rock, passed away July 22, 2010. Ned was born Jan. 4, 1923 in Clarksburg, W.Va., to Lee Silas and Mary Josephine (Cook) Switzer. Ned grew up in Weston, W.Va. where he graduated from St. Patrick's High School. In 1941 he went to Middle River, Md. where he worked for the Glen L. Martin Company building B-26 Bombers. He joined the U.S. Army in August 1944 and served with Reconnaissance Company 702nd Tanker Destroyer Battalion, Second Armored Division, 9th Army. He was discharged July 1946 as First Sergeant. Later he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the (Army) Reserves serving as Battery Commander and attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. Ned served as the Postal Clerk for the United States Post Office in Weston until 1955 when he and his family moved to Little Rock where he served as the manager and Secretary of the Board of Directors of Rivercliff Apartments. He remained an officer and director in senior capacity until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Jane Callison Smith Switzer, his parents and brothers Lee Paul and A. Raymond Switzer. He is survived by two children Susan Robertson (Royce) of Fayetteville and J. Steven Switzer (Liz) of Little Rock; four grandchildren Christopher Robertson of Fayetteville, Carrie Whelan (Brian) of Tega Cay, S.C., Michael Switzer and Catherine Switzer of Little Rock; one great-grandchild Owen Whelan of Tega Cay, S.C.; three sisters Mary Josephine Cheek of Little Rock, Constance Nabors of Dallas, Texas and Jean Marie Donnelly of Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as many dearly loved nieces and nephews. Ned was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, July 26, at Christ the King Catholic Church with Monsignor Francis I. Malone officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 25th at Christ the King Catholic Church.
