Minnie Lee Mayhan, 97, of Little Rock, died Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Parkway Heights Assisted Living Center. Miss Mayhan was born June 14, 1913 in Little Rock, the daughter of the late Henry Jackson and Etta Garner Mayhan. She was a Cum Laude graduate of Little Rock High School, received her B.A. degree in Mathematics from Hendrix College in Conway, and earned her M.A. degree in Guidance and Personnel from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City, New York. Miss Mayhan's additional graduate studies were completed at Columbia University, the University of Missouri, the University of California at Berkley, and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She was the first certified School Guidance Counselor in Arkansas. Miss Mayhan taught school in Hamburg High School, West Side Junior High School and Little Rock (Central) High School. From 1942 until 1945 she was a relocation advisor and counselor for the Japanese-American Relocation Centers in Jerome, Arkansas, and the Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona. When the Relocation Centers closed, she returned to Arkansas and was a vocational advisor for the Veterans Administration in Little Rock. From 1949-1957, Miss Mayhan was the director of guidance for the North Little Rock High School. In 1957, she became the director of guidance for the new Hall High School in the Little Rock School District and remained there for twenty-one years until her retirement in 1978. Miss Mayhan was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the Arkansas Education Association, a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Little Rock Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Besides her parents, Miss Mayhan was predeceased by her only sister, Miss Etta Neal Mayhan. She is survived by her cousins, Margaret Houston of Little Rock, Ginger and Marty Casteel of Pine Bluff, Mary Robin Casteel of Little Rock, and many dear friends, especially Betty Stephens, who was not only a devoted caregiver but a cherished friend, Lisa Lowery and the very special loving staff and residents of Parkway Heights Assisted Living. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 27, 2010, at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home Chapel, (501) 224-8300, with Dr. David Moore officiating. No formal visitation is planned.
