Rachel Dixon, 97, of Fort Smith, passed away November 17, 2010 in Fort Smith. She was born November 17, 1913 in Poteau, Oklahoma to James Babb and Vada West Babb. Rachel attended college at Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, OK. Following college she worked as a Flight Attendant for American Airlines in Dallas, TX. She married Gilmer K. Dixon in 1947 who was the owner of Seaman Store Company. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Gleaners Sunday School Class. Books were always an important part of her life. In college she worked in the school library and was president of the Varsity Book Club and later in her married life was co-owner of Vivian's Book Store with her good friend, Boots Maurras in Fort Smith. She is survived by two sons, Kirk Dixon and wife Elissa of Little Rock, Ark., Keith Dixon and wife Masako of Nagoya, Japan; one daughter, Carol Ann Bernal and husband Richard of Hereford, Ariz.; grandchild, Kirk Shigamasa Dixon of Nagoya, Japan; niece, Marylyn Toler and husband Calvin of Kansas City, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gilmer K. Dixon; three brothers, Iral, Carroll, and Singleton Babb all of Poteau, Okla. Memorial service will be Monday, November 22, 2010 at 10 a.m. in the Roebuck Chapel of First United Methodist Church. Services and cremation are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. The family will greet friends following the Memorial Service in the church narthex.
