Michael Francis Scanlan Jr.

Michael Francis Scanlan Jr., 90, of Little Rock, formerly of Hot Springs Village and Camden, Arkansas, passed away September 29, 2010, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born July 29, 1920, in Mobile, Alabama, to the late Michael Francis Scanlan, Sr. and Winifred Dandridge Scanlan. He attended the University of Alabama and Georgia Tech in accounting, and retired as a Director of Finance and Administration in 1985, after 45 years service with International Paper Company. He served with the U.S. Army in WWII and was assigned to a coastal artillery detachment in Recife, Brazil, to stop the massive losses of allied Brazilian merchant ships after attacks by German and Italian submarines. Mike was a devoted husband and father. He loved to dance, and enjoyed playing golf and watching sporting events. He had been a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Hot Springs Village. Mike was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Lucille Mobley Scanlan, in 2006, his sister, Dolores (Doe) Scanlan Lee, and his brother, John (Jack) Scanlan. Survivors include two sons, Michael Scanlan III and his wife, Rion, of Statesville, North Carolina; Richard Scanlan and his wife, Beth, of Little Rock; three daughters, Lynn Lawton and her husband, Jim, of Statesville, North Carolina; Kathy Robinson and her husband, John, of Little Rock; and Susan Scott and her husband, Ray, of Little Rock; one sister, Patsy Scanlan, of Mobile, Alabama; nine grandchildren, Kelley and Kirk Lawton, Hollace and Neal Scanlan, Eric Robinson, Sydney and Jett Scanlan, Amy Rodriguez and Ryan Scott; and six great-grandchildren, Lawton and Michael Kariher, Winnie Lawton, Ellis and Evan Scott, and Eli Rodriguez. Visitation will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Funeral Home at 5800 West 12th Street in Little Rock. A Memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, October 8, 2010, at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, 617 South Louisiana Street, in Little Rock, with Fr. Matthew Garrison, Celebrant. The family would like to thank Arkansas Hospice and the staff at Chenal Heights Nursing & Rehabilitation, especially the staff on the 100 Hall, for the excellent care of their Dad.
