Mary Maurice Friedman

Sister Mary Maurice Friedman, Sister of Mercy, died at 10:40 p.m., October 17th, 2010 at Catherine McAuley Convent in Barling, Ark. She was born October 11, 1928 in New Orleans, La., to Maurice and Margaret Friedman. She is preceded in death by her brother Maurice B. Friedman and her sister Jeanne Rose Hammel and survived by a brother, Frank P. Friedman and a sister, Imelda (Bobbie) Moriarity, numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Sister Maurice entered the Sisters of Mercy Community at Webster Groves, MO., on September 8, 1944 and made her religious profession of vows on March 12, 1947. She received a BS in Secondary Education in 1955 and a Masters in Education in 1959 from Loyola University, New Orleans, La. Sister received her certificate for guidance counseling in 1963 and a certificate for secondary education in English in 1968. Sister taught at both elementary and high school levels and was an elementary principle for many years in various schools in Louisiana, Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. She served on various school boards and corporations. Following her retirement from education ministry in 1993, Sister Maurice volunteered services in administration at Harborview Mercy Hospital in Barling, Ark., until 2000. Sister has lived in Hot Springs Ark., for the past nine years where she carried out a ministry of intercessory prayer and provided various forms of service to her community. The Rosary will be Thursday October 21, at 7 p.m., and the Funeral Mass will be on Friday October 22, at 10 a.m. at McAuley Convent in Barling, Ark. Interment will be at a later date at Calvary Cemetery in Fort Smith, Ark. Arrangements are under the direction of Fentress Mortuary of Fort Smith.
