Major CHARLES EARL ("CHARLIE") SHINN, 85 of Little Rock (formerly of St. Petersburg, Fla.), marched over the horizon to new life on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010. He was born April 5, 1925 in Moorestown, N.J. to the late Charles Soper and Clara Beaner Shinn. Major Shinn retired from the army in 1970, having served in World War II, the Korean War and in Vietnam. He survived capture and imprisonment as a POW in Germany and was recently honored as a POW by the Department of Veterans Affairs. He received numerous medals and citations for service to his country. Following retirement, Major Shinn served on the staff of Burlington Towers in St. Petersburg, Fla., later moving with his wife to Little Rock. Mr. Shinn was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Susan Shinn Harvest. He is survived by his loving wife, Mae B. Pickens Shinn of Little Rock, sons Charles Shinn (Susanne) of Fort Collins, Colo. and Harold E. Pickens, Jr. (Arlene) of the Philippines, and a daughter, Deborah Pickens Herden (Jim) of Little Rock. He also leaves nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. An unabashed car aficionado and ice cream junkie, Major Shinn (or "Pop-Pop," as he was called by his grandchildren) is now cruising the streets of heaven in either a Caddy, a Buick, or a Lincoln while eating buckets of his favorite frozen dessert. Pop-Pop, you will be well-missed here and well-loved where you are now. The family thanks Major Shinn's caregivers, Deborah Jones, Delett Richardson, and Mrs. Aqui, the Staff at the Towbin VA Hospital (3H) in North Little Rock, the Pastoral Care Team at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, and many dear friends for their love and support. A memorial service will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 12515 Cantrell Road, Little Rock, Ark. 72223 or the VA Volunteer Service (501-257-3288).
