Alfred D. Barnett, age 84, of Warren, Ark. died Tuesday August 31, at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 28, 1926 in Warren, Ark. a son of the late Albert Benjamin Barnett and Lottie Mae Dawkins Barnett. Also, preceding him in death was a brother, Albert B. Barnett, Jr and a step-father Carter Phillips. Mr. Barnett was the retired owner of four businesses: Barnett Electric, Barnett Heating and Air, B&B Mechanical and B&S Supply Co. Those who worked for him describe him as man of honor, integrity, selfless service and personal courage. He demanded a lot, but gave more in return and always encouraged them to better themselves. Mr. Barnett volunteered for the U.S. Navy during World War II at the age of 16 and served in many battles. He was recognized as "the leader" for all veterans' activities in Bradley County, having served for many years as chairman of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post # 4564, the American Legion and the Bradley County Veterans since its formation in 2002. His proudest accomplishment was the development and completion of the Bradley County Veterans Museum. He was an active part of the Warren community, with many years of service on the community Board of First Bank, the Warren City Council and the Warren School Transition Committee. He was past president of the Bradley County Chamber of Commerce, Warren Lions Club, Warren Planning Commission and the Warren Country Club. He donated many hours of his time to the Bradley County Memorial Hospital and was Bradley County Citizen of the year in 2003. He also developed and implemented the electric code for the city and was the first state president of the National Heating and Air Conditioning Association. He accomplished all this through his sense of high morals and great awareness of the need to contribute to community and country. He held a deep belief that each of us must do our part to make our community a better place to live, work and raise a family. "Mr. Al" as he was known, was a valuable asset to Warren, Bradley County, the state of Arkansas, and the United States of America.
