Mary Sue Smith Stabler, 71, of Bermuda Run, died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Stabler was born April 8, 1940 in Bald Knob, Ark. to Carson Walker and Elsie Altom Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Alan Carleton Stabler. She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Carey Stabler, M.D. of the home; a son, William Lyons Stabler and wife Jane of Rumson, N.J.; two sisters, Phyllis Sharp and husband Dale and Virginia Hall, all of North Little Rock, Ark. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Katherine Riviere Stabler of Greenville, N.C.; Meridith Stabler Burke and husband Ryan of Cornelius, N.C., and Brennan Vastine Stabler of Rumson, N.J.; and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stabler attended Mount Saint Marys Academy in Little Rock, Ark. and graduated from North Little Rock High School. She received her RN from Saint Vincent Infirmary School of Nursing. Sue later furthered her education at UNC-Greensboro, where she acquired her BSN in nursing and psychology and graduated Cum Laude. She continued her graduate work at UNC-Greensboro and became a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. Over the years she worked as a nurse at Saint Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock; Fort Roots Veterans Hospital and North Little Rock Memorial; Hotel Dieu Hospital, located in New Orleans, La.; George Washington University in Washington, DC; Saint Johns Mercy Hospital, located in St. Louis, Mo.; and Mandala Center (Charter) Hospital in Winston-Salem. In 2010, she celebrated her 50th year of nursing. Mrs. Stabler lived three years in Kaiserslautern, Germany with her husband Carey, who was stationed there in the Army. They traveled extensively in Europe and developed a love for traveling. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 2 p.m., Friday, August 5, 2011 at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael J. Buttner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to Saint Vincent Infirmary, Two St. Vincent Circle, Little Rock, Ark. 72205. "I wish to give loving thanks to a group of friends we call "stitch." Over 30-35 years, we have been there for each and all. One may leave the group, but they are never gone. What a blessing.
