Jacqueline Ann Sterner Douglas, 83, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at Fayetteville. She was born March 20, 1928 in Logansport, Indiana to Earl E. and Maude Chamberlain Sterner. She grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She received her B.A. and M.S. degrees from Indiana University and a Ph.D. degree from Ohio State University. She started her career in higher education at Ohio State University. She was Assistant Dean of Women at Texas Tech and became Dean of Women at the University of Arkansas in 1961. Between then and her retirement in 1993, she was professor of higher education and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She was appointed by then governor David Pryor to the University Of Arkansas Board Of Trustees for a ten year term from 1975-1985. She served as president and secretary of the Board. She was the widow of Hal Cooper Douglas whom she married in 1966. She had served as a secretary of National Mortar Board, an officer in the National Association of Women Deans and Counselors. She was the first woman elected to the vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church; she served several times on the vestry. She was also on the Executive Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas as well as other committees of the diocese. She is survived by a brother, Dan G. Sterner of Indianapolis, Ind.; a step-daughter, Ann Kelly and step-son, Doug Douglas, both of Fayetteville; two nieces; six step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 20 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Interment will be private, under the direction of Moore's Chapel. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday at Moore's Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be may be sent to Hal C.
