June Squires Brewer

June Anita Squires Brewer, 86, of Fort Smith passed away Saturday, Aug. 20 at St. Edwards Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. She was a resident of Covington Court Nursing Home. She was born in Jennings, La., on June 26, 1925 to George and Aurelia Blanche Squires. Her family moved to Sheridan, Ark., when she was six years old. After living most of her life there, she moved to Conway for several years and later to Fort Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, John M. Brewer, daughter Debbie Johnson and grandson Michael Brewer. Survivors are son and daughter-in-law John and Dara Brewer of Fort Smith; son and daughter-in-law George and Jackie Brewer of Pine Bluff; daughter Elaine Fletcher of Fayetteville; daughter Jackie Hewitt; sons Wilburn and Carroll Brewer; and son-in-law Bobby Johnson of Conway; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She worked at Jacksonville war plant after graduating from high school in 1944. One day while waiting for the bus at Camp Robinson to take her back to Jacksonville, someone called her name. "June, June Squires!" It was John Brewer, a former Sheridan High classmate. They began dating and were married a few months later. Many times she retold the story of how they got together. She admitted that she had a crush on him in high school but was too shy to speak. Fate intervened. While raising her seven children, she never worked away from the home. Being a wife and mother was her whole life. She enjoyed going to church. She was a member of North Main Baptist in Sheridan. After moving to Conway, she attended Pleasant Grove Baptist for many years. She also attended First Assembly of God in Barling before becoming a resident of Covington Court Nursing Home in Fort Smith. She never met a stranger, she greeted everyone with a smile, she couldn't keep a secret and she couldn't tell a lie. What you saw was what you got. That was June Brewer. Those who knew her loved her and will miss her! Funeral services will be held at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home in Sheridan on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 11:30 a.m. Visitation will also be Tuesday morning, beginning at 10 a.m., prior to the funeral. Burial will be at New Hope Cemetery. Arrangements by Memorial Gardens Funeral Home of Sheridan (870) 942-1306. To sign the online guestbook: www.memorialgardenssheridan.com.
