Muriel June Webb McLarty, age 90, died August 18, 2011. She was born December 12, 1920 in Prescott, Ark. She was preceded in death by her parents, Penny Hesterly and Addie Lee Moore Webb of Hope; and sisters, Pauline Tucker of Shreveport, La. and Doris Rogers of Gurdon, Ark. Mrs. McLarty graduated Valedictorian of her class of Gurdon High School. She received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Henderson State University. She was a longtime teacher in the Hope Public Schools, retiring as Principal of Garland Elementary School. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, James A. McLarty Jr., of Hope; three sons, James A. McLarty III (Sally) of Newport, Ark., Anthony Ward (Tony) McLarty (Linda) of St. Charles, Mo., Philip Webb McLarty (Kathy) of Hope; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. McLarty was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hope and a former teacher of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was past president of the United Methodist Women and Wesleyan Service Guild. She was past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, Chapter 329; past president of the Friday Music Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and Hope Garden Club, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. McLarty is fondly remembered for her beautiful soprano voice heard on Sunday mornings at First United Methodist Church, as well as countless funerals and weddings in the community. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church under the direction of Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home, the Reverend Steve Johnson officiating.
