She was born in Horatio, Arkansas, on June 5, 1928, to the late W. A. "Astor" and Margaret Gore Horne. Surviving her are her son, Garry Lawrence Hargis, and his wife, Alison of Little Rock; her grandson, Peter George Hargis of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her granddaughter, Katheryn Blair Hargis (Paul Cookman) and her great-granddaughter, Lillie Katheryn Cookman of Little Rock. She also leaves behind a dear friend, confidant, and daily breakfast buddy of many years, Mary Martin, who made sure she never missed a weekly hair appointment or a doctor's visit. Katherine, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, was a homemaker known for her baking skills, especially for her pound cakes, teacakes, and peanut butter cookies, which she showered on her family and friends and even those who never met her. Her daughter-in-law's high school students, who knew her as "Grandma" and begged for "Grandma's cookies", often showed their appreciation with cards and hand-decorated aprons.
