Mr. Leon E. Evans, 88, of Hamburg, died Monday, January 3, 2011. Mr. Evans was a native of Fountain Hill; a resident of Hamburg for over 50 years and a former resident of Alexandria, Virginia for 20 years. He graduated from Fountain Hill High School and from the University of Arkansas in 1941. He was a United States Air Force Pilot veteran having served during World War II. He was the manager of the Ashley Chicot Electric in Hamburg for 12 years. He was an administrator for 20 years for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association in Washington, serving as the coordinator for their Latin America program and he was a member of Hamburg First United Methodist Church. After his retirement, he owned and operated Evans Greenhouse and was a member of several orchid societies in Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. He was always active in civic clubs and was a founding member of the Hamburg Rotary Club. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sally Houston Evans; a son, James Evans; his parents, Charles Curtis & Ollie Mae Forester Evans and two brothers, Keith & Dean Evans. He is survived by two sons, Thomas Evans and wife, Wanda, and John Evans and wife, Cindy, all of Hamburg; a daughter, Susan Ayers of Richmond, Virginia; a sister, Madie Stroud of St. Louis, Missouri; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services are 2 p.m., Thursda at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Flat Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday.
