Agnes Rhodes Harrelson

Martha Agnes Rhodes Harrelson, 97, died January 20, 2011, at Bedford Care Center in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Mrs. Harrelson was born November 6, 1913, in Crossett, Arkansas, one of nine children of James Robert and Ellen Huntley Rhodes. She moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas, with her husband Woodrow and children in 1958, where she taught until her retirement in 1977. She was a graduate of Arkadelphia High School and Ouachita Baptist University. Prior to moving to Jonesboro, she had lived throughout the western United States while her husband Woodrow was in the Army, and later lived in Russellville, Arkadelphia and North Little Rock, Arkansas. She taught school in Worley, Idaho; Russellville; and North Little Rock before moving to Jonesboro. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma teachers' honorary, she was statewide award winner in the organization's competition for both her paintings and her poetry. She is preceded in death by her husband of almost 69 years, Woodrow Wilson Harrelson; one daughter, Carol Ann; two sisters, Melba Rhodes Dooley and Elizabeth Rhodes McDaniel; four brothers, James Robert Rhodes, Charles Edward Rhodes, Huntley Rhodes, and William Herschel Rhodes; and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Dopico. She is survived by a son, Robert Stephen "Bob" Harrelson and his wife Susanne of Maumelle, Ark.; daughter, Sharon Herrelson Wertz and her husband David of Hattiesburg, Miss., two sisters, Marguerite Rhodes Brown of Jonesboro and Rosemary Rhodes Bowlin of Pocahontas, Ark.; five grandchildren, Christy Harrelson Henry and Beth Harrelson Roland of Perryville, Ark.; Robert Woodrow Harrelson of Little Rock, Ark.; Lt. Col. Stephen Andrew Wertz of Fort Sill, Okla.; and Dr. Stacey Leigh Wertz of Conyers, Ga.,; and 13 great-grandchildren. Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, January 28, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, Ark., with visitation at 1 p.m. at the church. A private graveside service will be held prior to the service. Langford-Bookout Funeral Home in Jonesboro is in charge of arrangements, assisted by Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg.
