Alfred Francis Hartz, born February 14, 1926, died February 28, 2011. Alfred was a veteran of World War II, earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He returned from the war and married Mary Louise Gunnell. Settling down to family life, he joined his father, Jacob Hartz Sr., and brothers, Jake Jr. and Marion, at Hartz Seed Company. His career there included installation and management of one of the first computer systems for the seed business. After the business was sold, he built a house at Greers Ferry Lake to get away from the children, grandchildren and great-children detailed below. His military service served him well as he battled five children through their teenage years. The children include Charlotte Ann Eagle (Joe) of Stuttgart, Lyle Thomas Hartz (Karen) of Atlanta, Francis Lee Hartz (Bonnie) of North Little Rock, Charles Alan Hartz (Jamie) of Houston and Susan Kathryn Sturdy of Stuttgart. When Alfred thought that he might get some peace and quiet, the grandchildren began to arrive. He wouldn't brag outright, but he was proud of all 11. Charlotte and Joe have four children: Clay Dean Eagle, Joseph Ryan Eagle, Tanya Lynn Perry and Susie Turner. Lyle and Karen have two girls, Anna Elizabeth and Rachel Louise. Lee and Bonnie have a son, Francis Ehren and daughter, Amanda Jane. Alan and Jamie have a son, Jonathon Christopher. Susan has a daughter Allison Rebecca and a son Stephen Christopher. There are 10 great-grandchildren and more on the way. Born to Jacob Hartz Sr. and Isabelle, he was one of eight children. His surviving siblings include Jake Hartz of Stuttgart and Marjorie Ellen (Sis) McNutt of North Little Rock. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bernard, Dick and Marion; and sisters, Mary Jane Flannery and Anna Bell Kleiner. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Turpin Funeral Home chapel with burial following in Shiloh Cemetery at Crocketts Bluff. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at Turpin Funeral Home in Stuttgart. Please go to www.turpinco.com to sign the online guestbook.
