Nancy Belle Plowman Woodson

NANCY BELLE PLOWMAN WOODSON passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011. She was born in Little Rock, Ark. on April 12, 1939 to Norvell N. and Alleen Shillcutt Plowman. She was a graduate of Little Rock Central High School, class of 1957. Nancy Belle received two degrees from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville including a Master of Education degree in 1962. After receiving a Master of Education degree Nancy Belle taught in the Little Rock public school system. On Aug. 17, 1963 she married James H. Woodson. Jim was an industrial and chemical engineer with DuPont. The family transferred from Martinsville, Va., to Beaumont, Texas and then to the Wilmington, N.C. area in 1972 where they remained and raised their family. A devoted Christian, Nancy Belle was a member and Elder of Little Chapel on the Boardwalk Presbyterian Church at Wrightsville Beach, N.C., where she particularly enjoyed the fellowship and volunteer duties of the Mother's Morning Out program, the Presbyterian Women's Circle, the Women of the Church, and Meals on Wheels organizations. Nancy Belle was an active member of the Harbor Island Garden Club, the Red Hat Society, and a founding member of the Sand Dollar Investment Club. As a young woman, Nancy Belle served as a Petty Officer 3rd class in the U.S. Navy Reserve and later was active in family support organizations during Operation Desert Storm. Nancy Belle was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, daughter, Susannah Belle Woodson, and sister, Selma Ann Plowman Hobby. She is survived by her sons, J. Christopher Woodson of Fayetteville, N.C. and Theodore C. Woodson of Wilmington, N.C.; brother, Norvell N. Plowman, of Little Rock, Ark., as well as four loving grandchildren, James D. Woodson and Anderson J. B. Woodson of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. and Wyatt E. Woodson and Cole S. Woodson of Wilmington, N.C. A graveside service will be held at Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock, Ark. at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, with a reception following for family and friends at the home of her niece, Allison and Jeff Hatfield, 5236 Sherwood Road, Little Rock, Ark. on Saturday, March 12 from 3-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to, The Little Chapel on the Boardwalk Presbyterian Church, 2 West Fayetteville Street, Wrightsville Beach, N.C. 28480.
