Mary Faye Spainhour

Mary (Rowton) Spainhour, born Dec. 9, 1935 passed from this life at her home in the early morning of March 19, 2011. She is survived by her husband of 54 years Claude Spainhour; son Claude Timothy "Tim" Spainhour and wife Carla (Gunnels) Spainhour and their three children Preston James, Carolyn Rae, and Wilson Thomas Spainhour; son Richard Presley "Rich" Spainhour and wife Catherine (Smith) Spainhour and their three children Deirdre Gael, Rhiannon Clare and Áine Maeve Spainhour. She is also survived by two sisters, Julia Ann "Judy" (Rowton) Shook and her husband Roy Zearl Shook and Patricia Sue Rowton. Mrs. Spainhour was a member of Crossett First Baptist Church since August 1956. She served many years as the girls ACTEEN leader but she is best remembered for serving more than 20 years as leader in the 3-year-old nursery. She loved all the children and seemed to be able to build a special relationship with each one. She was in the Crossett Band Boosters for many years. Mary had been a den mother for the Cub Scouts. She was active in the Ashley County Genealogical Society. She was known for her sharp wit. People loved to be in meetings when Mary was included. Somehow she always seemed able to enliven things. She always considered that her role as wife and mother was God's highest calling for her. In that role she became an outstanding cook and as her cooking reputation grew she branched out into catering for several years. Mrs. Spainhour will be remembered by her family in a private graveside service at Crossroads Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 22, followed by a memorial service at First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Reverend Jimmy Lewis will officiate.
