May Joan Field Tompkins, 88, Barnard, Missouri passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011 at Parkdale Manor, Maryville, Missouri. Joan was born May 14, 1922 in Brentford, England, the daughter of Herbert and Fanny (Ricks) Field.  She worked in a munitions plant during World War II, making shell casings.Joan married Raymond Lee Tompkins on February 5, 1944 in St. Lawrence Church of England, Brentford, England, becoming a "War Bride." Raymond returned to the United States after the end of the war and Joan and her first born son came in 1946. Joan worked as a clerk at Wylie's and JC Penney's in Great Bend, Kansas and as a CNA at Great Bend Manor and Parkdale Manor in Maryville. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Great Bend, attended the Guilford United Methodist Church in Guilford, Missouri and was a member of Nodaway County Widowed Persons Service, the Barnard Historical Society and O'Howell Strader American Legion Post Auxiliary Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond on October 14, 1994; her parents; son-in-law: Jerry Thacker; sister: Pauline Field; brother: Bert and his wife: Cynthia Field. Survivors include her daughter: Barbara Thacker, Barnard, Missouri; sons: Alan (Mickey) Tompkins, Searcy, Arkansas; Stephen Tompkins, Hutchison, Kansas; Robert (Marcia) Tompkins, Lonoke, Arkansas; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters: Daphne (Paul) Chappell, Little Neston, England and Jean Wootton, Surrey, England; sister-in-law: Mary Tompkins, Maryville; aunt: Rose Newman, Brentford, England, cousin: Queenie Hunt, Peacehaven, England and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call anytime at Price Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 2 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2011 at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, Missouri. Burial is in Barnard Masonic Cemetery, Barnard, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Guilford United Methodist Church.
