James Carr Nichols, Jr.

James Carr (J.C.) Nichols Jr., age 82 of Monticello passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at his home. He was born March 21, 1929 in Drew County, AR to the late Myrtle Gibson Nichols and James Carr Nichols, Sr. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Crain Nichols; two brothers, Alfred Nichols and Luther Nichols; and a sister, Lillian McKeown. Mr. Nichols graduated from Drew Central High School and attended Arkansas A&M College (now UAM). He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Monticello, where he had served in many capacities over the years. He worked as a pipefitter before settling in Monticello in 1960, entering into the plumbing business with his brother, Luther. He retired in 1991 after 31 years. He worked at both Union and Commercial banks over the next 12 years, served on the Monticello City Council, Drew County Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas Manufactured Housing Board, Drew County Public Facilities Board and was a past member of the Monticello Parks Commission. Mr. Nichols was also a member of the Monticello Volunteer Fire Department and belonged to the Caraway Hunting Club for many years as well as the Monticello Bass Club. Survivors include three daughters, Pat McClain and husband, Jim of Dallas, Texas, Marcia Chronister and husband, Chris of Russellville and Becky Lincoln of Benton; one sister, Bonnie Jordan of Monticello; eight grandchildren, David Chronister of Russellville, Heidi Angel of Ft. Worth, Texas, Kate Cheng of Dallas, Texas, Adria Chronister of Russellville, Drew Chronister of Russellville, Caroline Gibson of Benton, Nick Chronister of Russellville, and Matthew Lincoln of Benton; and nine great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be 1 p.m., Friday, March 25 at Rock Springs Methodist Church in Wilmar with visitation to follow from 1:30-3 p.m. at the church.
