Homer Earl "Ike" Burris

Homer Earl "Ike" Burris of Hensley, Ark., passed away March 24, 2011. He was born March 21, 1926 at Hensley, Ark., the son of William Homer and Willie Barbara Dozier Burris. Mr. Burris was surrounded by his family as he departed this earth and met his Lord and Savior at the Heart Hospital in Little Rock, Ark. at the age of 85. He was a life long member of Lone Pine Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for 42 years. He was retired from the United States Postal Service after 36 years of service as a rural mail carrier. Along his journey he collected and delivered not only mail, but countless friendships with his patrons. Mr. Burris was a military veteran of WWII. He was an active leader in his community where he served as president of the local PTA and also served as a board member of the Woodson Hensley Water Department. He volunteered in numerous events and activities where he was often asked to use his talent and love for cooking to raise money for school programs and civic groups. Mr. Burris was a dedicated family man and had a gift for making people feel at home in his presence. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Floyd Burris, Ralph Burris, George Burris and Howard Burris. Sisters: Irene B. Murray, Kathleen B. Shirron and Barbara Jo Wages. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Sue Carr, sons, Douglas Burris (Cathy) of Harrison, Gregory Burris (Terri) of Hensley and Dwight Burris of Overland Park, Kan.; daughers: Anna Varnell (Lee) of Redfield and Charlotte Lunsford (Robert) of Sheridan; nine grandchildren: Sarah Hufford (Jason), Rachael Burris, Adam, John and David Burris, Macey and Olivia Varnell and Ben and Luke Lunsford; four great-grandchildren: Brooke and Robert Dooms and Jayson and Jackson Hufford. He was also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A visitation service will be held from 1-2 p.m., Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home (501) 224-8300 in Little Rock, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. with Bros. Ronald Meredith, Eugene Miller and Douglas Burris officiating. Burial will follow at Woodson Cemetery. A special thank you to the ladies from Baptist Home Health for all of the love and care provided over the past few years. Also, a heart felt thank you to all of the nursing and support staff on the 2nd floor at the Heart Hospital in Little Rock.
