Michael Smith of Romance, Ark., beloved husband, father, brother and friend, died March 22, 2011 at the age of 61. Mike retired in 2009 as Chief Master Sergeant from the 189th Civil Engineering Squadron of the Arkansas Air National Guard after 40 years of service, including a tour of duty in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. For his hard work, dedication and contributions to his country he was recognized with many honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal and Arkansas Distinguished Service Medal. In addition, a longstanding member of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees Local 204, he worked for many years as a stagehand and steward for Little Rock concert venues, which he loved and continued after military retirement. Mike had a way with people, touching the lives of all he knew and was loved by so many. He is survived by his wife, Becky, his brother, Wendell (Benton), four daughters, Tara Smith (Little Rock), Laura Smith (Dallas, Texas), Natalie DeBlock (Cabot), Jennifer Truncali (Birmingham, Ala.), and two granddaughters, Lily and Katie. He is further survived by a niece, Carrie Blandford, and numerous other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Jewel (Gates) Wynn, stepfather, Joseph Wynn and father, Homer Smith. Visitation will be Sunday 3-5 p.m. and funeral services Monday at 10 a.m., both at Moore's Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Military Funeral Honors will be performed on Monday at noon before burial at Arkansas Veterans Cemetery at North Little Rock. Donations should be made in his honor to his favorite charity (The Alzheimer's Association) or the 189th Airlift Wing Family Support.
