Alan D. Smith passed away at his home March 6, 2011 in Whittier, Calif. He was born Oct. 5, 1923 in Springdale, Ark., where he grew up and attended schools. In 1942 he joined the 8th Army Air Corp. and became part of the 390th Bomb Group, stationed in England. He was a decorated veteran receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, and Eame Service Ribbon with four Battle Stars during his 35 missions flown over Europe in B-17 bombers during World War II. After the war he relocated to Whittier, Calif., with his wife, Allene. She preceded him in death in 1984, after 40 years of marriage. The raised their family in Whittier, where he worked for Rose Hills Memorial Park for 36 years. He retired in 1988 as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He also served in the local Kiwanis Club for more than 25 years. He was awarded the Man of the year award and served as the local treasurer as well as the State Treasurer. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his son, Gill Smith; his daughter, Marla Muir and her husband Mark; his daughter Trudi Wilcox; his grandson Lee Wilcox and his wife Michelle. Interment at Rose Hills on March 12, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in his name, to the charity of your choice or the 390th Memorial Museum Foundation, 6000 E.
