Mary Elizabeth Hargis

Mary Elizabeth Shannon Hargis died April 19, 2013. She was born in Wellington, Texas on Oct. 6, 1916, the oldest of five children born to Joseph and Sarah (Bessie) Shannon. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings; her sister Margaret, and brothers Joe Jr., Fuller, and Howard Payne Shannon. She grew up with her family in Knox County, Texas, where she graduated from Sunset High School in 1932. After college, Liz moved to Van Horn, Texas to teach elementary school. There she met John Calvin Hargis. They were married on June 20, 1943. Two sons were born to this union, Mike and Joe Ray Hargis. Liz and John were in the livestock business. Victims of the drought of the early 1950s in west Texas, they moved to Leslie, Ark. where they lived until John's death in 1995. Liz lived out her remaining years in Conway, Ark., where her sons and their families live. Liz is survived by her two sons, Mike (Ann) and Joe Ray (Linda); seven grandchildren, Christy (Jason) Trantina, Tommy Hargis, Beth (Michael) Harness, all of Conway, John Hargis Jr. (Lindsey) of Fairbanks, Alaska, Joel (Mandy) Hargis of Jonesboro, Justin (Tabatha) Hargis of Denver, Colo., and Adam Hargis of Little Rock, Ark. Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Kelly (Martha) Hargis of Little Rock and sister-in-law, Sherry Hargis of San Angelo, Texas. She was loved by many, and was an especially wonderful first class lady. She devoted her whole life to her family, her Lord, her church, and to teaching school children for 38 years. Funeral services are under the direction of Roller McNutt Funeral Home in Conway, Ark. Funeral services are scheduled at Leslie First United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013, with burial to follow at Dennard Cemetery in Dennard, Ark. A special thanks to Hospice Home Care of Conway for their help, support, and love shown above and beyond the call of duty during this difficult time. A special thanks to Carole Barnes, Gayle Hay, and Scotty Davis who all made her last days and ours bearable.
