Sherman Hershel Chastain

Sherman Hershel Chastain. Sherman was born to Benjamin Lewis and Lena Dudley Chastain in Centerton, Ark. on October 29, 1912. He passed from this life in Cassville, Missouri on November 29, 2013 He married Mildred Louise Suttle on June 10, 1933 in Bentonville, Ark. He and Mildred moved to Fort Smith in the early 1940's where he continued to live after her death in 1991 until moving to a nursing home in Cassville, Mo. in 2013. In 2010 he was invited to be an honored guest at the Bentonville High School homecoming activities as the oldest surviving graduate. He was in the graduating class of 1931 at what is now known as Old High in Bentonville, Ark. Sherman retired from Jefferson Bus Lines in 1977 after driving a bus most of his working adult life for them. His fellow drivers knew him affectionately as "Gabby" which was very appropriate. In October 2012 a 100th birthday celebration was held in Fort Smith, Ark. with over 60 family and friends attending. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred, brother Herbert, two nephews and two nieces. He is survived by several nieces, nephews and numerous grand nieces and nephews and their families. His surviving family is scattered over Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee and Oklahoma. A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Fort Smith, Ark. with burial following at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Fort Smith, Ark. next to Mildred. Viewing will be from 9 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
