Dr. Nelton Duward "Pat" Patterson died Saturday, February 2, 2013 in Conway, Arkansas. He was born in Elaine, Arkansas April 1, 1919. Just after Pearl Harbor Pat enlisted in the Army Air Corps. In WWII he served with the 8th Air Force as a Captain and Operations Officer of the 384th Bomber Group in England. He was awarded the European Campaign Medal with 3 bronze stars and the Air Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters. From 1956 to 1973 he served Baptist churches while earning a Bachelor's degree from Memphis State and a Doctors degree from North Texas University. From 1963 to 1968 he managed the Sunshine Home for Dependent and Neglected Children in Dallas, Texas. In 1968 Dr. Patterson joined the faculty of UCA, retiring in 1984. He served 12 years as Chair of the Counseling and Psychology Department. He was a founding board member and a guiding hand for Independent Living Services and active nationally and locally in the Democratic Party. His parents, Ben F. Patterson and Jettie Sparks Patterson, two brothers, Joseph Cullen and Williford Price Patterson, two sisters, Mable Grey Patterson and Kathleen P. Wood, and his first wife Doyles McCorkle Patterson preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Dunlap Patterson, two children, Wright (Tiffany) Cookus of Bryant and Tally (Cory) Mars of Conway and grandchildren Cally and Chris Mars and Blanton and Zack Cookus and his sister June Patterson. Memorial services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Conway Thursday, February 7 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Roberts and Rev. Sam Teague officiating.
