Russell Vaughn Carroll

Russell Vaughn Carroll, Mountain Brook, Ala., died June 17, 2013, at the age of 92. Born May 13, 1921, in Augusta, Ga., he was the son of Cornelia Vaughn Carroll and Charles Marion Carroll. The family later moved to Little Rock, Ark., where he finished high school. Following graduation from Little Rock High School, he continued his studies at The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina, in Charleston. Veteran of World War II, Russell served with the 8th Air Force stationed in England. Following the war, Russell enrolled at The University of Arkansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. In 1957, he settled in Birmingham, Ala., where he was employed by EBSCO Industries, Inc., from which he retired in 1986. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Charles Marion, Jr., Savannah, Ga. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katherine Sprigg Carroll; four nieces, Nancy Carroll Merolla, Wilton, Conn.; Ellyn Fretz Murdick, Mobile, Ala.; Susan Sprigg Keenan, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; Katherine Sprigg Kilpatrick, Birmingham, Ala.; three nephews, William Vaughn Carroll, Cincinnati, Ohio; Thomas Robertson Fretz, Southborough, Mass.; Joseph Noble Sprigg, Birmingham, Ala.; sister-in-law, Nancy Vance Carroll, Savannah, Ga. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2013, followed by commitment of ashes in the church's columbarium, The Reverend H. Huey Gardner, officiating.
