Roy A. Cox

Roy Cox, 97, passed away Monday morning in Carlisle, Ark. He was born August 26, 1915, to the late Chesley and Lillie Howard Cox. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Aileen Tarter Cox, brothers, Otis Cox and David Cox, sisters, Mabel Cox, Bessie Haller, Opal Patton, and son-in-law, Rodney Parnell. He is survived by a son, Roy Alan Cox (Donnita) of West Memphis, Ark., daughter, Phyllis Cox Parnell of Warren, Ark., grandchildren, Todd Parnell, Beth Mann, Dr. Amy Reeves, Christie Madden, and five great grandchildren and a host of family and friends. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of England, Arkansas. Roy graduated from England High School and attended Ohio State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He lived practically all of his life in Lonoke County. He was Secretary-Treasurer of Young's Department Stores prior to going into business with his brother, Dave, at Cox Bros. Motors in England, Ark. He was former Mayor of Carlisle, Ark., and was the Mayor of England, Ark., for 12 years. He served on the Silver Hair Legislature for 10 years. He was a board member of CareLink of Arkansas serving a term as President. He was a life-time member of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry. He continued to work well into his nineties at the Plantation Agricultural Museum at Scott, Ark., where he received special recognition for his service. He was an avid reader of all types of books until his eyesight faltered and had to cut back to one or two books a week. He loved to travel, loved the outdoors, whether bird hunting or playing golf, and loved family vacations at the beach. Funeral services will be held at the Chapel at Roller England Funeral Home, 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27th, 2013. Burial will be in Carlisle Cemetery.
