Doris Y. Roth, 107, passed away on Sept. 5, 2013, in Hot Springs Village. Born in Manchester, N.H. in 1906, she moved with her family to Minnesota when she was two and grew up in Wisconsin and suburban Chicago. Following her childhood intention to be a teacher, she graduated from National College of Education. She then taught in elementary schools around the Chicago area, before marrying Charles W. Roth in 1936. She returned to teaching when both her children, Charles Daniel Roth of Alexandria, Va., and Margaret R. Nelson of Kennebunk, Maine, were in school. She enjoyed teaching five-year-olds, but her greater love was guiding four-year-olds in the nursery school of the First Congregational Church, Western Springs, Ill., and guiding parents through the associated Family Life Program. Following their retirements, Chuck and Doris moved to Hot Springs Village in 1976, were charter members of the Village Ballroom Dancers, officers of the DeSoto Square Dancers, members of the Audubon Society, and active golfers. They were living at Cedar Lodge when her husband died in 2004. She continued to be an enthusiastic gardener, welcoming visits from her children, her niece, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and enjoyed being photographed at the gym on an elliptical rider on her 100th birthday. She preferred that there be no memorial service and no memorial gifts, but hoped to be remembered in another way. In her words, "Please say a helpful word to someone every day, sharing God's love." Arrangements have been entrusted to CedarVale Funeral Home. Online Guest book/obituary at www.cedarvalefuneralhome.com.
