Floyd "The Butcher" Johnson, made his final takeoff on Thursday, September 19. Born in Taft, California, he apprenticed his stepfather in the grocery business and graduated from Santa Cruz High School (California) in 1951. He then joined the US Air Force, and served for 26 years as an aircraft mechanic, with tours during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. After retiring in 1977, he bought a small Jacksonville, Ark. grocery in 1978, naming it Floyd's Meat and Seafood. He and his late wife Rhonda (d. 2000) and their three surviving children, Lorie Johnson, Lisa Marshall, and Thad Johnson helped run the business for 36 years. Lisa Marshall purchased it from Floyd and moved it to its present place in Sherwood, Ark., where she and fiance Larry Gordon run it. Floyd's other passion besides food (and telling great war-stories) was flying, and he piloted a 1961 Cessna 172 out of the North Little Rock Airport. Memorial service will be Friday, September 27 at 2PM at Rest Hills in Sherwood. Funeral will be Monday, September 30 at 1 p.m. at the Veterans National Cemetery in NLR.
