DORIS NORA HAND MCCLANAHAN, 80, of Maumelle passed away Dec. 27, 2014. Born in Little Rock, Ark. on June 14, 1934, she was the daughter of the late William Louis Hand and the late Hazel Van Pelt Hand, formerly of North Little Rock, Ark. She was the devoted wife for 60 years of retired U.S. Navy officer, the late LCDR Jim David McClanahan until his passing in August 2013. She grew up in Hot Springs and North Little Rock and was voted 1949 Lakeside High School Prettiest Girl in the yearbook. She resided at many duty stations across the nation and overseas while her husband served in the Navy from 1953 to 1973. During the Navy years she did volunteer work for the American Red Cross and received several service pins. Doris had a lifelong interest in art and in Key West, Fla. was known for her driftwood/beach mixed media art collages and in San Diego, Calif. she received recognition for her landscape oil paintings. She was also fascinated by women's clothing design and was a fabulous seamstress. Upon her husband's retirement from the Navy in late 1973 they lived briefly in Little Rock before moving to Camden, Ark. for 25 years where her husband worked for both General Dynamics and Raytheon Corp and they attended the First Baptist Church of Camden. During this time she participated in the church choir, community theatre and the League of Women Voters. In 2000 they moved to Maumelle, Ark. and attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock until their health declined. Doris had a beautiful soprano voice and sang in church choirs for fifty years and was a frequent soloist. She enjoyed musicals and performed in several community theatre musicals over the years. She loved to use her talents to lift the spirits of those around her and brighten their day. Family to cherish her memory are a daughter, Kathy Jane Young and her husband, Paul of Little Rock, Ark.; a son, Jim David McClanahan Jr. and his wife, Linda of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Michelle Kathleen Young and Aubri Young Duran and her husband, Matthew and her only great-grandchild, Trent Duran; a grandson, Jim Ryan McClanahan; a sister, Carolyn Wilson of Dermott, Ark., another sister, Betty Newby and her husband, Willie of Pensacola, Fla. and a brother, Bill Hand Jr. of Dermott, Ark. The family will receive friends at visitation on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Griffin-Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home, 7724 Landers Rd., in North Little Rock. The graveside service will be at on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Griffin Leggett Rest Hills with Rev. Matthew Duran officiating. The family would like to particularly thank the attending staff of Hospice of Little Rock and the staff of The Lakes at Maumelle Nursing Home in Maumelle, Ark. for their years of devoted care to Doris.
