CHARLES D. GARRETT JR., 95, of Little Rock, died on Jan. 31, 2014. He was born on July 2, 1918, the second of four children born to Charles D. Garrett Sr. and Elsie Hodges Garrett. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Thomas Garrett; sisters, Iber Hering and Esther Vaughan; and one great-grandchild. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lillian Wilson Garrett; sons, Charles Edward Garrett of Flower Mound, Texas, and Charles Louis Gray Jr., and wife Betty Glass of Houston, Texas; daughters, Linda McGaha and husband Michael of Kennesaw, Ga., Shirley Moore and husband Joe of Booneville, Miss., and Debbie McMillen and husband Joe of Collierville, Tenn.; three special nieces, Bobbye Hannah of Little Rock, Lyla Bailey of North Little Rock, and Yvonne Taylor of Sardis, Miss.; grandchildren, David Garrett, Deborah Koffler, Michael Smith, Jason Greene, Cindy Brigman, Diana Wren, Christopher Moore, Brett McMillen, and Keith McMillen; and nine great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express our love and gratitude to his loving caregivers, Carolyn and Willie Burns, who treated our dad as though he were their own. Charles served in the 96th Infantry Division in World War II from 1942 to 1945. He participated in two amphibious landings on the islands of Leyte and Okinawa. After the war, he either managed or owned different grocery stores in Little Rock spanning 4 decades. Starting in 1986, he worked as a driver for Roche/LabCorp for many years. He then worked in the deli in the Krogers on Chenal Parkway for many more years, finally retiring for good at age 93. Charles was a loving and giving husband and father. He truly cared about people and loved meeting and talking with them. He never met a stranger. And he was always glad to help anyone in need. His was a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in his memory be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014 in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Funeral Home, 5800 W. 12th Street, Little Rock (501) 661-9111 with Rev.
