For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor has the eye seen, O God, what You have prepared for him who waits for You. Isaiah 64:4. Dorothy Faye Smart McClendon was called to her heavenly home, surrounded by family on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. She was the daughter of Rufus and Vera Smart and was born at home in Stephens, Arkansas on October 1, 1928. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Rudy, and her loving husband of 53 years, Coach Charles McClendon. As a devoted wife, she was an incredible asset to her husband in many ways. This extraordinary hostess had a joyful gift for making everyone feel part of her family. She genuinely valued people and had a special concern to help other coaches wives survive and thrive in their important roles. She was part of the initial inspiration to establish the American Football Coaches Wives Association 25 years ago. This group still gathers annually from across the nation to offer mutual support and special encouragement to wives of football coaches. She was an amazing mother to a daughter and son-in-law, Dee and John Alberty, Baton Rouge and a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Carolyn McClendon, Orlando, Fla.; three grandsons, Dr. J. Brannon Alberty and wife Stephanna, Baton Rouge (five great-grandchildren: Ellie, Reki, Katie Faye, Mac, and Suri Alberty); Bret Alberty, New York City, Ben Alberty and wife Leslie, San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Frances Smart of Hot Springs, Ark. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St. in Baton Rouge, La. from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, January 17 and on Saturday, January 18 from 10 a.m. until funeral services at 11 a.m. Graveside services at Stephens Cemetery, Stephens, Ark. on Sunday, January 19 at 2 p.m. Special thanks to Jacqueline Gwin of Spiritas at St. James Place for her faithful and compassionate care giving.
