Marion E. "Matt" Matthews

Marion E. "Matt" Matthews, 92, of Rogers, passed away Jan. 16 in Bentonville. He was born June 24, 1921 in Oswego, Kan. to Orville S. and Jessie Pearl Houts Matthews. While serving in the Army Air Corps on the South Pacific island of Biak during WWII, he was wounded four times during an air raid attack which resulted in permanent paralysis of his left hand. Following discharge from the service, he was employed at the Kansas Ordinance Plant in Parsons, Kan. for a number of years before moving to Shickley, Neb. to farm for some time. He later received training in Boston, Mass. before returning to his career as a Senior Quality Control Inspector for the US Defense Department in Fullerton, Calif. Following retirement, he moved to Bella Vista, then Parsons, Kan. before settling in Rogers in 1992. His passion was golfing. He was married for 57 years to the love of his life, FrankaDell (Frankie) Stier Matthews who preceded him in death, as did his parents; a grandson, Thomas J. Appleby II; a son-in-law, Doug Dubin; and his five siblings, Ruth, Maxine, Madge, Ray and Bob. He is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Dubin of Excelsior Springs, Mo. and Deborah (Jim) Platanitis of Rogers; two sons, Theodore Matthews of Las Vegas, Nev. and Randall (Carolyn) Matthews of Huntington Beach, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Chip Jackson of Fellowship Bible Church NWA, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20 at Rollins Funeral Home in Rogers with a Visitation preceding at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Rogers Cemetery.
