Margery Anita Hixon Long, 94, formerly of New Orleans, La. and Little Rock, Ark., passed away on July 8, 2014 in Frisco, Texas. Funeral services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. at a later date. Margery was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 21, 1919, to Edna Grace Wickham and Charles Edward Hixon, a career Army officer. She had one brother, Maj. Gen. Robert C. Hixon. During her years as an "Army brat", Margery lived in several states, including Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Hawaii. Margery attended college at the University of Missouri and Michigan State before graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in French and Spanish. During her college years, Margery was a member, and eventually the President, of her beloved sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. Recently the Grand Council of the national sorority honored Margery for her 75 years of service to the sorority. During World War II Margery worked as a civil service employee at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. There she met her future husband, Col. Floyd H. Long, U.S. Army, from Winnfield, Louisiana. They were married on May 11, 1946, and began a life together in the military with assignments in Austria, Virginia, Texas, and Illinois. Their only child, Margaret (Peggy), was born in Munich, Germany in 1951. After 31 years in the Army, the Longs retired to New Orleans, where they lived for 30 years. While in Louisiana, Margery continued using her leadership skills by serving as an officer in several local garden clubs, an adviser to the Newcomb (Tulane) chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, and as President of the Southeastern Girl Scout Council. In 1998 Margery and her husband moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, to be closer to their daughter and her family. After her husband's death in 2003, Margery continued her love of gardening by leading local garden clubs and becoming an Arkansas Master Gardener. In the spring of 2014, Margery followed her daughter and family to the Dallas area. Margery is preceded in death by her parents, brother, and husband. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Long Pierce, and her husband, Stephen E. Pierce of Cross Roads, Texas; grandson, Brian E. Pierce, and wife Tamra of McKinney, Texas; granddaughter Stephanie P. Easley, and her husband David of Oklahoma City; 3 great-grandchildren, plus several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, Margery's family would appreciate your contribution in her memory to a local chapter of the Humane Society. Local arrangements are being handled by Stonebriar Funeral Home in Frisco, Texas.
