Ray South

Ray South, 88, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014 in North Little Rock. He was born August 14, 1925 in Lake City to the late Ed and Willa South. Mr. South served his country proudly in the United States Air Forces. He graduated from Arkansas State University and worked for the Department of Agriculture as a soil conservationist in Northeast Arkansas. He enjoyed gardening and traveling and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake City and the Lion's club. He is survived by three daughters Dr. Karen Leonard and husband John, Lisa Brannum and husband Sam and Susan Cheesman; grandchildren, Mark Kemp, William Cheesman, Michelle Cheesman and Melanie Cheesman; great-grandchildren, Kadin Kemp, Noah Kemp, Luke Kemp, Cara Kemp, Sophia Harmon, Fiona Harmon and Jamieson Harmon; three sisters, Marie Wall, Ruby Caldwell and Ida Barker and husband Harold. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Wilma Walton South; a son-in-law, Allen Cheesman; a brother, J W South; two sisters, his twin Fay South and Edna Qualls. The family will receive friends from noon until 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home at 300 W. Matthews Ave in Jonesboro. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Jon Lorch officiating. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Gary Qualls, Kim Barker, Ted Qualls, Dr. Eddy Caldwell, Greg James and Mark Kemp and as honorary pallbearers, William Cheesman, Harold Barker, John Leonard and Sam Brannum.
