JANET MARKS STERN, who died peacefully at home on July 25, 2014, was born Dec. 14, 1926. She was the second daughter of Lester and Madolyn Levy Marks of Little Rock. Shortly after World War II, Janet met her husband, Leonard of Camden, Ark., a naval veteran of the D-Day invasion and career executive with Sears & Roebuck. They were married in 1947 and blessed with three children, Leonard, Lester and Lisa Stern. Lovely and vivacious with an unconventional wit, Janet enjoyed entertaining, homemaking, playing duplicate bridge and mah jongg. For most of her adult life, Janet lived in Birmingham, Ala., a quintessential homemaker of the post-WWII era. When Mr. Stern retired from Sears & Roebuck in 1984, the couple moved to Little Rock, reuniting with family and the city they always considered their home. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard; sister, Leslie Strauss and brother-in-law, Dr. Alvin Strauss. Cherishing her memory is her immediate family which includes her children, Leonard, Lester and Lisa Stern; six grandchildren, Carey Shuman and Sam Stern, and Megan, Miranda, Alaina and Callie Stern; four great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Lynne Stern. A graveside service will be held this morning at 10:30 a.m. at Oakland Jewish Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Temple B' Nai Israel, 3700 N. Rodney Parham Rd., Little Rock, Ark. 72212 or Arkansas Hospice, 14 Parkstone Dr., North Little Rock, Ark. 72116. Arrangements by Little Rock Funeral Home, (501)224-2200. Janet's online guestbook may be signed at www.littlerockfuneralhome.com.
