Vollie C. Fields Jr.

Vollie C. Fields Jr., COL. USAF (RET.), 74, of Lynnfield, died June 9, 2014 surrounded by the love, comfort and care of his devoted family. Born in Lake Village, Arkansas, he was the son of Vollie C. Sr., and A. Pauline Fields of Dermott, Arkansas. Col. Fields attended Dermott High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Masters of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, from Louisiana Technical University. Col. Fields received his commission from Reserve Officers Training Corp upon graduation in 1962. He was a graduate of Squadron Officers School, Air Command and Staff College and Industrial College of Armed Forces. His first USAF assignment was as a research officer in electromagnetic propagation at the Cambridge Research Laboratory. In the mid 60's he was attached to the U.S. Consulate General, Frankfort, Germany. Colonel Fields served his country with honor flying sensitive missions in SE Asia during the Vietnam War era. Returning to Hanscom AFB, he was the Branch Chief of Meteorological Equipment within the AFCRL. He then served as ionospheric research engineer in Washington, D.C. with the USAF Technical Applications Center and subsequently moved with the organization to Patrick AFB as Chief of the Space Sensor Branch. Returning to Washington, D.C., as Electronics Staff Officer in the Office of Deputy Chief of Staff, Research and Development, he served five years in the Air Staff at the Pentagon. Col. Fields was reassigned to Hanscom AFB, Electronics Systems Division as Deputy Director of the Joint Tactical Communications Office (TRITAC). He was named Director of the Telecommunications Program Office, then transferred to the Physical Security Systems Directorate as the SAFE Program Director and as the Director, Physical Security Systems Directorate.Following his USAF career, he managed technical programs and contracts within Raytheon Services Company, Burlington, Mass. and FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center, Atlantic City, N.J. Throughout his life, military career, and post-military career, his passion was flying. He became a highly seasoned and competent instructor pilot, and was rated in a number of single and multi-engine aircraft. Devoted husband of Elizabeth Twomey of Lynnfield, he is survived by Lore Fields of Germantown, Md., Lesley (Fields) Skorupski and her husband, Douglas, of Ashburn, Va., Ann Twomey, Peabody, Mass., Paula (Twomey) Barrett and her husband Michael of Wakefield, Mass., Charles Twomey and his wife, Christina Theokas of Arlington, Va., a sister, Alice (Fields) O'Connell and her husband Bob of Port Hadlock, Wash., nieces Cathy Parra and her husband Pedro and Donna Jennings of Davie, Fla., and grandchildren, Carolyn, Kayley, Reilly, Nicholas and Reagan.
