Bertha Mae Hargis

Bertha Mae Hargis, age 97, formerly of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, passed away in Allen, Texas, on June 1, 2014. She was born December 4, 1916 in Winkler, Texas to Willie Steven and Mary Jane (Massey) Carlisle. On September 7, 1935, Bertha married, Henry Price Hargis in Spur, Texas. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary, and the Garden Club in Pine Bluff. Bertha worked most of her life as a Child Welfare Social Worker for the State of Arkansas and also worked at the Methodist Children's Home in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was instrumental in starting a youth home in Pine Bluff and received many awards for her dedication and service to foster children. She is survived by her children, Henry Price Hargis Jr. and wife Betty of Conway, Arkansas, Wesley Steve Hargis of Center Ridge, Arkansas, Diane Hargis Currie of Schertz, Texas, and Margie Hargis King and husband George of McKinney, Texas; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Bertha is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews. Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, Willie Steven and Mary Jane Carlisle; husband, H.P. Hargis; brothers, Rex Carlisle, Buck Carlisle and W.S. Carlisle; and sister, Avanelle Carlisle Faubus. The family would like to thank the compassionate caretakers at Glorious Living Care Home in Allen, Texas where Bertha resided for one year. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas. In lieu of flowers the family wishes you would contribute to the Charity of your choice.
