Horace Vernon Whitten

Horace Vernon Whitten, of Raleigh, N.C., was born on Aug. 28, 1941 in Mount Holly, Ark. to Vernon and Avalene Whitten. He went home to be with the Lord June 20, 2014. He attended Castle Heights Military School in Lebanon, Tenn., graduated from Stanford University and was in the Navy Reserves. He enjoyed a long career working for IBM and treasured the lifelong friendships he made there. Horace loved cars and old planes and held a land speed record in the C/Production Class East Coast Timing Association of 134 mph. He leaves his wife, Ruby Greifzu Whitten; step-children, Ruth Prince of Beach Park, Ill. and Larry (Kathy) Prince of Lincolnshire, Ill.; four grandchildren, Kailey, Kelly, James and John Prince. He is also survived by his mother, Avalene Reynolds of Bearden, Ark.; brothers, Norman Whitten of Bearden, Ark., David (Susan) Whitten of Texarkana, Texas, and Raymond (Harriet) Whitten of Texarkana, Texas; and sister, Judy (Carl) Conley of Texarkana, Texas. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014 at North Ridge Alliance Church, 7601 Falls of Neuse Rd., Raleigh, N.C. 27615. The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at McKendree Cemetery in Mt. Erie, Ill.
