Murlene McBroome Woods Burns, 92, of Heber Springs, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014. She was born April 9, 1922, in Hillman, Arkansas, to the late Stanley and Ethel Moore McBroome. In addition to her parents, Murlene was preceded in death by her first husband, Floyd Woods, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident in 1955, while she was pregnant with their daughter, Floye Ann. She lived in Dumas, Arkansas, for 32 years and worked as a nurse 20 years for Dr. Guy U. Robinson and Dr. Howard R. Harris. Murlene was in the Eastern Star for more than 20 years and was of the Methodist faith. She was a great cook and known for her prized homemade Christmas goody bags. After the death of her first husband, Murlene spent the next several years as a single mom providing for her three children working as a nurse. In 1960, Murlene married the recently late Mack Burns who she described as her soul mate. Mack and Murlene shared a deep abiding love; always together and always holding hands. She was proud of her entire family and especially her three children. Her two sons', Shelby Woods and Wayne Woods, careers centered on promoting Arkansas tourism and their love for the state. She shared their love for Arkansas, and through the years she enjoyed reunions and family gatherings at Lindsey's Resort, Mountain Harbor Resort, Buffalo Outdoor Center, Petit Jean, Hot Springs, Red Apple Inn, and several other Arkansas attractions. She also had a special relationship with her daughter Floye Ann. She had just recently moved in with Floye because her home was destroyed by fire on December 14, 2013. Murlene is survived by three children, Shelby Woods and his wife Dianne; Wayne Woods and his wife Linda; Floye Ann Woods; three grandsons, Michael Woods, Chance Woods, Kyzer Woods; two granddaughte's, Casey Woods-Flores and her husband, Arian; and Lindsey Payton and her husband Pete; seven great-grandsons, Tanner Rackley, Caleb Payton, Cole Payton, Carter McElhany, Luca Woods-Flores, Dante Woods-Flores, Mateo Woods-Flores; one sister, Norma Fay McBroome Dunn; three brothers, Charles Wesley McBroome, Billy Ray McBroome, Norman McBroome; and other relatives and many friends. The family has suggested memorials in honor of Mrs. Burns be made to the First United Methodist Church in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Visitation will be 12:30-1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Heber Springs. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Heber Springs with interment at the Woodman Cemetery in McCrory, Arkansas.
