William Douglas "Bill" Simmons, Sr., 61, of Lexa passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014. Bill was born July 11, 1952, in West Helena to Anita Simmons and the late Doug Simmons. He was a caring husband, father, and grandfather, and a loyal friend to many. He leaves a wife of 36 years, Carrie Wilson Simmons; daughter, Stevee Pryor (Scott) of West Helena; son, Drew Simmons (Dawn) of Benton; two grandchildren, Eli Simmons Pryor and Bradley Caroline Pryor; brother, David Simmons (Lisa) of Little Rock; nieces, Savannah Simmons and Madeline Simmons; aunt, Juanita Clements of Lexa; and many other family members and friends. Bill was a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and worked in the banking industry for over 30 years. Immediately following his banking career, Bill formed Cornerstone Leasing where he worked as president for 10 years. During his lifetime, Bill achieved many accomplishments and provided his service in numerous areas, including: Helena Health Foundation, board of directors; Tri County Fair, board of directors; East Arkansas Education Association, board of directors; West Helena Lion's Club, president; Special Olympics, volunteer; King Biscuit Blues Festival, volunteer; Twin City Athletic Association, board of directors; Phillips County Chamber of Commerce, president; Young Life of Phillips County, committee chair and board member; served as president and CEO of Merchants & Farmers Bank (now Southern Bancorp). Graveside services for Bill Simmons are 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Sunset Memorial Park in West Helena. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Brother Howard Baker, Brother Johnny Jones, Brother Jim Harrison and Brother Floyd Johnston will officiate. Pallbearers are Patrick Roberson, Jon Roberson, Chris Roberson, Timothy Jones, Jeremy Jones and Jacob Johnston. Bill's love and dedication to Young Life was one of his greatest achievements. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Young Life of Phillips County, P.O. Box 3675, West Helena, Ark. 72390.
