Hugh Charles "Grumpy" Smith, age 69 of Monticello, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. He was born July 28, 1944 in Lake Village, Ark. to the late Hugh Benton Smith and Jewell Simpson Smith Kennedy. He was a retired director of vinyl binding from the Arkansas Department of Correction and was a very active member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught training union for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and also enjoyed yard work, hunting and fishing. Mr. Smith loved serving people through his church, sincerely loved the Lord and spent many hours in prayer. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Vickie Ann Sharp; his father-in-law, Red Davis; and a brother-in-law, James Britton. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Vicky Davis Smith of Monticello; one son, Davis Hugh Smith and wife Wendy of White Hall; one daughter, Anna Smith Jones and husband Rick of Monticello; one granddaughter, Ashlynn Hope Smith of White Hall; three grandsons, Alan and Arron Jones of Monticello and Davis Smith II of White Hall; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Davis of Monticello; two sister-in-laws, Ann Willingham and husband Robert and Sue Britton all of Dermott; two nephews, Danny Medford of Lake Village and Jason Britton of Crossett; one niece, Amiee Britton of Dermott; and his very special pet dog, Baby. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Union Cemetery at Rye. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
