EARL FLETCHER "BEAR" JACKSON, 76, died on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014 after a brief illness. He was born March 12, 1938 in Little Rock, Ark. to the late Earl and Lucy Fletcher Jackson of Lonoke. Fletcher graduated from Lonoke High School, was an Eagle Scout and went to Boy's State. He went to the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and graduated 3rd in his law school class. After law school, he was a clerk at the Arkansas Supreme Court for the late Judge Carlton Harris. He then became an assistant at the Arkansas Attorney General's Office. At the time, he was the youngest lawyer ever to appear before the United States Supreme Court where the following article appeared in the Washington Post: Ya'll on High It was bound to happen, apparently, now that the Southern drawl is heard even in the highest councils in Washington. The other day, the honorable gentleman of the Supreme Court were addressed as, simply, "Ya'll." A lawyer with the appropriately Deep South name of Jackson—Fletcher Jackson, assistant attorney general of Arkansas—used that form of address rather than the exalted form, "Your Honors." Jackson was asking the nine justices to uphold an Arkansas law. It was not immediately clear whether the justices had been influenced by the temporary lapse of their accustomed dignity. He worked for the law firm of Howell, Price and Worsham. He later became an Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney's Office, where he worked for 40 years. After he retired, he spent his time working in the garden where he loved plants. He also spent time taking care of his beloved animals. He will always be remembered for his dry wit. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jayne Granoff Jackson. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn High and husband, J.L. of Lonoke. A special thank you is extended to Dr. Joe Beck II and his staff for their compassionate care. Graveside services will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park on Monday, Nov. 24, 2014 at 1 p.m., officiated by Pastor Ronald Bacic. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Pulaski County, 14600 Colonel Glenn Rd., Little Rock, AR 72210. Arrangements by Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.
