Dorothy Loveless Harlan of Stuttgart, Arkansas, went to be with Our Lord on Oct. 2, 2014. Dorothy was born in Stuttgart to Nora and William Edward Loveless on Feb. 14, 1932. She was a proud lifelong resident of Stuttgart and a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church where for many years she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was a past member of the church women's circles and the Junior Women's and Grand Prairie Garden clubs. Dorothy was also a former Miss Stuttgart. She attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. Following college, Dorothy returned to Stuttgart to teach. Her first teaching post was at the Goldman Sunshine School near Stuttgart, teaching grades one through six in the one-room schoolhouse. Soon after, she married Van D. Harlan Jr. of Humphrey, Ark., and became a homemaker. Their marriage of 57 years was blessed with three children: Van Harlan III (Maria) of Jacksonville, Ark.; John Harlan of Stuttgart; Beverly Bacon (John) of Gallatin, Tenn. Dorothy was a beautiful, gentle and loving person. Children and animals adored and trusted her at first sight. Her quick wit and charming intelligence made her a standout with friends and at social gatherings. Dorothy was a voracious reader, passionate gardener and bird lover especially with her little hummingbird friends in her backyard. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents and six of her seven brothers: Al, Wilmer, Walter, Harry, Howard and Larry Loveless. She is survived by her brother Dr. Donald Loveless (Peggy) of Tulsa, Okla.; three sister-in-laws, Lucy Loveless and Susan Loveless of Memphis, Tenn., and Dee Loveless of Wilmington, Del.; and many loving nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the Turpin Funeral Home in Stuttgart from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, October 6. Funeral services will be held in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 7, at 11 a.m. Memorials in her memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Stuttgart or to the Arkansas Educational Television Network at aetn.org.
