Bernie Louise Bernice Gaskin Simmons

Bernie (Louise Bernice) Gaskin Simmons, 81 of Lonoke finished her life's journey and went home to be with the Lord on September 16, 2014. Bernie was born in McClelland, but lived most of her life in De Valls Bluff. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.W. and Helen Gaskin and her loving husband of 55 years, Alonzo (AL) Simmons. Bernie leaves behind her beloved cat "Elvis" and four Goddaughters, Lisa (Bob) Duckworth, Laura (George) Bean, Lois (Robert) Olsen and Loretta (Mark) Bean. She also leaves behind many cousins, adopted grandchildren, great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many, many friends. A woman of faith she was an inspiration and a blessing to all who knew her. She was also a woman of many talents. When she was younger, she and her husband loved to travel and see the sights. For many years she wrote a food column for the De Valls Bluff newspaper. She loved to cook and told people if you left her table hungry it was your own fault. Comfort food was her specialty and she had a favorite dish for each occasion. She was an avid reader and bird watcher. Her home was a wildlife sanctuary and no animal ever left hungry or in need of care. Through the years, she touched many lives, helping, feeding, mentoring, and giving advice. Bernie was also a Registered nurse for over 30 years. She graduated from St. Vincent's and started her career there. She later transferred to the Veterans Hospital in North Little Rock, where she was instrumental in establishing and running the Geriatric Unit. In later life after retiring from the Veterans Hospital, she worked in a local nursing home so she could assist in the care of her Mother-In-Law. While we mourn her passing let us also rejoice in her crossing to her new heavenly home. The family would also like to thank Springhill Baptist Hospital and Baptist Hospital Hospice Staff for the wonderful and compassionate care they provided. Memorial service will be private; family members only. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen. Online obituary at www.westbrookfuneralhomehazen.com.
