Nina Brown Cowan passed away at Westwood Health and Rehab in Springdale, Ark. on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016. Funeral services will be conducted at Salt Creek Baptist Church in Early, Texas on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017 at 2 p.m. with Brother Jimmy Mize officiating. Visitation will take place the previous evening at Heartland Funeral Home in Early, Texas from 6-8 p.m. Burial will occur in Cox Cemetery in McCulloch County, Texas. Mrs. Cowan was born Jan. 12, 1924 in McCulloch County to Emzy Brown and Ada Jackson Brown. She attended school at Milburn and graduated from Rochelle High School in 1940. She married Raymond Eugene Cowan Jan. 15, 1941. She earned a BS degree from Hardin Simmons University as well as a Master of Teaching degree from the same university. Mrs. Cowan was a teacher for 30 years in the school districts of Wingate, Blackwell, and Abilene. She worked at Hendrick Home for Children in Abilene, Texas following retirement from public schools. Over the years, she served faithfully in the local Baptist church also serving as Sunday School Teacher. She is survived by daughter, Dr. Anita Cowan Lawson (Fayetteville, Ark.); grandson, Jacob Lawson and wife Mindy with sons Luke and Drew (Elkins, Ark.); granddaughter, Katie Lawson Osterberg and husband Jason with children Josie and Jonas (Cave Springs, Ark.); sister, Lois Brown Scott (Brownwood); with several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by husband, Raymond Cowan; daughter, Sandra Cowan Pabst; and sister, Merle Brown Vawter. Local arrangements by Beard's Funeral Chapel.
