Maurice Henry Reeves

Maurice Henry Reeves went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 8, 2017. He lived a life filled with faith, family, work and service to his country and fellow man. Maurice was born on May 23, 1919 in Conway, Arkansas and grew up on a farm during the depression. He went to work in the C.C.C. to help his family financially before joining the Army in 1940. He served five years in WWII and one year in the Korean Conflict, as well as six years in the Army Reserve. He served in the 13th Combat Engineers Battalion, 7th Infantry Division and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. Mr. Reeves was co-founder of the 13th Engineers Battalion Veterans Association. He served on the Board of Governors for many years, as well as President for four years. In 1995, Maurice was invited, along with other veterans, to represent the U.S. Army in the 50th year commemoration of the end of WWII. They traveled to Okinawa and Leyte to participate in memorial services. Maurice worked for the U.S. Post Office for 30 years. Until recently, he was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, teaching a men's Sunday School class and serving as a deacon. Maurice was also active in Gideons International for many years distributing Bibles and serving in their prison ministry. His hobbies included duck hunting, golf, photography and attending Razorback games. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 71 years, Mildred L. Reeves; his daughter, Karen Jones (Bob); his granddaughters, Michelle Hayden (Jon), Suzanne Vest (Craig), and Katherine Ryan (Aaron); brothers, Jake Reeves, John Reeves and Charles Reeves; and sisters, Mary Bailey Cook, Hazel Rhea, Jean Paul and Binnie Shepard. Maurice also leaves behind eight beloved great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews whom he also loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom G. Reeves and Agnes Byrne Reeves, stepmother, Joyce Reeves, brother, Howard Reeves and sisters, Margaret O'Brien, Helen Denosky and Barbara Simpson. Special thanks to Pleasant Valley Rehab and Nursing facility for their care and kindness. Extra thanks to Sequia Farmer for her loving care. Services will be Wednesday, January 11 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Charles Barfield. The family will greet friends following the service. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church, Gideons International or Alzheimer's Arkansas.
