Evelyn Ann Allison Pounds passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at her home in Prescott, Arkansas on Saturday, January 14, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Una Mae Cagle Allison and Thomas Johnston Allison, and by her husband, James Williams Pounds. She is survived by her daughters, Allison Pounds Ingram (Jim Mark) of Little Rock and Jami Louise Pounds of Prescott; sister Maurine Stricklin of Arkadelphia; grandchildren Austin, Alex, Andrew, and Ashley Ingram of Little Rock; niece Barbara Stricklin Blankenship (Larry) of Starkville, Miss.; nephew, Ronnie Stricklin (Corliss) of Arkadelphia; many cousins, extended family, and dear friends. She was born in Arkadelphia on May 20, 1940. She grew up in the Copeland Ridge community 13 miles south of Arkadelphia on the tallest hill on the ridge. From childhood, her relationship with Jesus Christ was very important to her. She was in church at Harmony Hill Baptist Church every time the doors were open. She has been a member of First United Methodist Church in Prescott since 1968. She was active in teaching adults and children in Sunday School for over 30 years. She served others continually by cooking and taking meals to sick, bereaved, and shut-ins. Her friends said she was always the first with a dish. After graduating as Valedictorian from Gurdon High School in 1958, she enrolled at Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia. She graduated in three years, ranking third in her class, in 1961 with a degree in Elementary Education. She received her Masters Degree in Elementary Education in 1962. While working as a sales clerk at West Brothers in downtown Arkadelphia, she met the love of her life, Jim Pounds, while he was working next door in his father's hardware store. They were married at First United Methodist Church in Arkadelphia on August 19, 1962. She taught in Little Rock, Texarkana, Pine Bluff, and finally settled in Prescott in 1968. She taught third grade and fifth grade in the Prescott Public Schools for 25 years where she received numerous awards including Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year in 1981. She retired in 1992 after thirty years of service. She had a profound impact on many of her students and co-workers. She was a mentor and champion to so many people. She was very involved in the life of her community and Nevada County. She was instrumental in founding the Nevada County Day Service Center for handicapped children in 1976. This center has been an integral part of Jami's life for 41 years. She was a member of the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America and the Benjamin Culp Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for 30 years, where she served at the local, district, and state levels. She was also very involved in the Prescott Tri-Service Club (President, 2000-2002), Prescott Garden Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women educators. She was an avid bridge player, master gardener, and an exquisite seamstress. She loved teaching others about bridge, gardening, cooking, sewing, needlepoint, and genealogy. She saved her most valued time after retirement for her family, especially her four grandchildren. She was Choo Choo to them. She took them in search of trains up and down Highway 67. She took them fishing, hunting, swimming, traveling, as well as cheering them on in their numerous sporting events. To her children and grandchildren she gave her undivided time, love, and attention. The one thing she wanted most people to remember about her was that she was an honest, trustworthy, and loyal friend. In the words of King Solomon, "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.' " Proverbs 31:25-29.
