Anne Shewmake Burnside

Anne Shewmake Burnside died July 3, 2017, in Little Rock. Born in Monticello, Ark., July 28, 1923, to Dr. Marion Edward and Theresa Finn Shewmake, Anne met O.C. "Googie" Burnside in 1939. Googie joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and was sent to Officer Candidate School in New Mexico. When he received his commission, Anne took the train to Albuquerque, where, on her 19th birthday, they began a 61-year marriage. Following WWII and law school for Googie, they settled in Lake Village. As an alto who played the piano by ear, Anne was the perfect addition to First Presbyterian Church. She loved entertaining, playing bridge, and sitting on her porch, enjoying the view of Lake Chicot. She raised two children, adored five grandchildren who called her Doll, and had a wide circle of friends. Besides her parents and husband, Anne was predeceased by sister and brother-in-law, June Shewmake and R.D. McAnally, and brother-in-law, J.H. "Jukie" Burnside. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Ann Burnside; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Vic Fleming; grandchildren, Elizabeth Weindruch and her husband Emmett; Edward Fleming and his wife Catherine; Haynes Burnside; Ellis Burnside; and Georgiana Burnside; and great-granddaughters, Anna Clary and Josephine Weindruch; sister-in-law, Sara Burnside; niece, Beth Sentell and her husband Webb; nephew, Bruce Burnside and his wife Lynn; four great-nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 16, at 2 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, Lake Village, Ark. under the direction of Bishop-King Funeral Home of Lake Village, Ark. The family extends special thanks to Anne's neighbor and friend, James Parker, and to the Presbyterian Village staff. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Lake Village.
